[Bewegtbild] Ivan Manriquez: TJ-SD Installation

This project has its origin in the analysis of satellite images taken in the boundaries between Mexico and the United States. From this perspective I can observe the concept of frontier while the images evoke the imaginary attributed to the region. My work is a reflection on current political activity in contemporary societies and how technology has influenced it through the use of various devices and media languages.

As part of this project, TJ-SD is a video installation consisting of a series of graphs projected simultaneously on a LED board and a television screen, corresponding to numerical data related to the border region between Tijuana and San Diego. The number of inhabitants, the area codes, the postal codes, the time zones and the length of this border are displayed on the board; while the video shows a constant reconfiguration of the pixels that make up the satellite image of the place.

The whole project is entitled „Borderline“. It referres to two concepts: to borderline as a personality disorder, a mental condition characterized by an extremely polarized mood. And to the dividing and imaginary line that limits two or more regions.
